ACA Scrutiny Is Rising. Assurance Matters

Scurtiny Rising

The Trump administration is intensifying efforts to identify improper, potentially fraudulent enrollments in Affordable Care Act [ACA] Marketplace plans.

On September 22, Reuters reported that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services [CMS] halted coverage affecting more than 760,000 enrollees, barred hundreds of brokers accused of submitting statistically implausible applications, and introduced a temporary freeze on new broker registrations.

CMS estimates unauthorized enrollments could result in as much as $6.6 billion in improper federal spending for the 2026 plan year.

The action is focused on Marketplace enrollment — not employer ACA reporting. But the direction is unmistakable: ACA data, eligibility, verification, and auditability are under increasing scrutiny.

Greater Scrutiny Demands ACA Assurance
For employers, ACA reporting already depends on data assembled across HCM, payroll, benefits, eligibility, and workforce records — interpreted against changing compliance rules.

When that data is incomplete, inconsistent, or late, the consequences can include incorrect employee statements, filing errors, rejected submissions, correction workloads, penalty exposure, and difficulty responding confidently to IRS inquiries.

The latest enforcement activity is another reminder that simply transmitting ACA data is not enough. Employers need to know:

• Is every required employee included?
• Are eligibility and affordability calculations correct?
• Do workforce and benefits records reconcile?
• Are the appropriate IRS codes supported by the underlying facts?
• Can every filing decision be traced and defended?

That requires more than year-end processing. It requires ACA Assurance.
